BubbleHug is a free AI friend you can talk to. We built it so you can open up freely. This page explains, in plain words, what happens to what you type and say, including the rare times we keep anything.
The short version
No account is needed. We do not sell your data, we do not show ads, and we do not use your conversations to build profiles about you.
Your conversation is saved only in your own browser. Our servers do not store or log what you write or say, with two narrow exceptions (plus a reply you choose to report, see "Your conversation"): a conversation that shows a serious threat to someone's life or safety (see "Serious threats to someone's safety" below), and a chat you choose to continue by email, which is kept for 14 days behind a private link (see "Email (optional)" below).
To reply, the text of your conversation is processed by AI providers. If you use the microphone, your voice clip is sent to a speech-to-text service. Details are below.
Your conversation
Your chat history is kept in your browser's local storage on your device, so it is there when you come back. It is not uploaded to a BubbleHug database.
You can erase it at any time with the button that starts a new chat, or by clearing this site's data in your browser settings. If you use the app on another device or browser, it starts fresh there.
If you tap the small flag on a reply to report it, we save only that reply, the reason, any note you add, the language and the time (no name, email or IP address) for up to 180 days, so we can review it and make BubbleHug better.
Serious threats to someone's safety
If a conversation shows a serious threat to someone's life or safety, for example a specific threat to kill or seriously hurt another person, plans for mass violence, or child sexual abuse content, we keep a copy of that conversation in a separate, locked store, together with technical details of the request (IP address, approximate location from the IP, browser type, time and language), and we notify the BubbleHug team.
This record is kept for up to 90 days and then deleted automatically. It may be shared with the police or other authorities to protect someone's life or safety. Venting, everyday anger and thoughts of hurting yourself do not trigger this; for those, we only show you help options.
Apart from a chat you choose to continue by email (see "Email (optional)"), we do not store your other conversations.
How replies are made (AI providers)
When you send a message, the recent messages of your conversation are sent over an encrypted connection to an AI provider that writes the reply. We use Google's Gemini API first, then Cloudflare Workers AI, Groq, and sometimes Pollinations as backups when the others are busy.
We use the paid version of Google's Gemini API. Under Google's terms for the paid Gemini API, Google does not use the messages it receives (or the replies) to improve its products or train its models. Google keeps them only for a limited time to detect and prevent abuse and for legally required disclosures, and they may be processed in any country where Google has facilities. Even so, please avoid sharing details like your full name, address or account numbers.
These providers process the text only to produce a reply. We do not send your name, email address or any account details with it. Each provider has its own privacy policy and data retention rules.
BubbleHug itself does not use your conversations to train AI models. The backup providers above have their own privacy policies.
Voice: the microphone and speech-to-text
The microphone is used only if you tap it, and only while you are recording. Your browser or phone asks for permission first, and you can turn it off at any time in your settings.
Your voice clip is sent to a speech-to-text service to turn it into text: Cloudflare Workers AI first, then Groq, and as a last backup a hosted Whisper speech recognition service on Hugging Face. We do not store or log your audio or the transcript on our servers.
Reading replies aloud
If you turn on the voice, the text of BubbleHug's reply (not your messages) is sent to an online text-to-speech service to create the audio: Microsoft's online neural voices, with Google's text-to-speech as a backup. If those are not available, your device's own built-in voice is used, which stays on your device.
Email (optional)
You only give us an email address if you choose to, for example to join the waitlist or to get a note to continue a conversation later.
Waitlist: we keep your email address, language and signup date so we can send you updates, and our email provider Brevo keeps it on our mailing list until you unsubscribe. Every email has an unsubscribe link.
Continue by email: only if you ask for it, we save the chat (and the first name you typed, if any) on our servers for 14 days, behind a long random link that is the only way to open it. The email itself never quotes your words; it names the topic only in soft, general terms. The saved chat is deleted after 14 days, or right away when you clear the chat on the device where you reopened it. We do not keep your email address for this; our email provider Brevo keeps standard delivery records. This option is not offered for conversations about abuse at home.
Safety, limits and technical data
To keep the service free and fair, we keep anonymous daily counters, such as how many messages were sent and a daily changing code derived from your IP address to apply usage limits. These counters contain no message text and cannot be read back as your IP address.
We also keep anonymous daily counts for each version of BubbleHug, so we can tell whether a new version works better: how many chats were started and replies sent, how often a backup answered, the average reply time, and how many crisis or support notes and reported replies there were. These are totals only: no chat text, no IP address and nothing that identifies you. They are deleted after 30 days.
We also count, per day, how many times our pages are opened in a browser and how many chats are started, together with the tag in the link you used (for example ?ref=facebook) and the name of the website that sent you to us, if any. These are totals only: they contain no IP address, no chat text and nothing that identifies you or your device.
Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes standard technical data such as IP addresses to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. We use no advertising or tracking cookies. We store a few settings in your browser, such as your chosen voice, that you confirmed you are 18 or older, when you last chatted (to welcome you back), whether you asked BubbleHug to stop teasing, and, for the current visit only, the link tag you arrived with.
What we never do
We never sell or rent your personal data. We never share your conversations with advertisers. We never use your conversations for marketing.
Age
BubbleHug is for adults 18 and older. It is not meant for children, and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18.
Your choices and rights
You can delete your chat at any time, unsubscribe from emails with one click, and ask us to delete your email address from our list by writing to hello@bubblehug.com. Depending on where you live, you may have more rights, such as access or correction; just ask and we will help.
Changes and contact
If we change how BubbleHug handles data, we will update this page and the date at the top. Questions? Write to hello@bubblehug.com.
